Lessons Learned: Kendrick Lamar’s “Control” Verse
Last night Big Sean released a single called “control” featuring Kendrick Lamar and Jay Electronica, but all talk is surrounding Kendrick Lamar’s verse and rightfully so as he basically goes on a lyrical onslaught and spits the verse of the year while calling out the entire rap game and tells them that he wants to bury all of them and claim his spot as Hip Hop King, he even claimed to be the King of New York, he’s from Compton, real hip hop heads know what that means. This verse has single handedly both shaken up and inspired the entire hip hop community and currently has the whole internet (rappers included) in a heated debate.
The section of the verse causing mayhem is below.
“I heard the barbershops be in great debates all the time
Bout who’s the best MC? Kendrick, Jigga and Nas
Eminem, Andre 3000, the rest of y’all
New niggas just new niggas, don’t get involved
And I ain’t rockin no more designer shit
White T’s and Nike Cortez, this is red Corvettes anonymous
I’m usually homeboys with the same niggas I’m rhymin wit
But this is hip hop and them niggas should know what time it is
And that goes for Jermaine Cole, Big KRIT, Wale
Pusha T, Meek Mill, A$AP Rocky, Drake
Big Sean, Jay electron’, Tyler, Mac Miller
I got love for you all but I’m tryna murder you niggas
Tryna make sure your core fans never heard of you niggas
They don’t wanna hear not one more noun or verb from u niggas
What is competition? I’m tryna raise the bar high
Who tryna jump and get it? You better off tryna skydive” – Kendrick Lamar
There are a few lessons to be taken from this verse on how you should approach business and life overall.
Friends Or Not, Everyone Wants To No.1 – “I’m usually homeboys with the same niggas I’m rhymin wit / But this is hip hop and them niggas should know what time it is….”
In whatever field you find yourself in you more than likely have a few competitors who are your friends as well, you may think they have your best interest at heart at all times and they probably do, they want you to do good, just not as good as them. Behind the smiles and the friendly handshakes they have a deep desire to take your spot, steal your clientele and get more money than you do. Be aware of this and never let your guard down because you think your “friend” would never do something to put you at risk. Accept that we live in a world of people driven by self interest and you’ll be better off.
Be Ready To Compete: “What is competition? I’m tryna raise the bar high / Who tryna jump and get it? You better off tryna skydive…”
You should have a constant paranoia of being overtaken and laid to rest by some new comer in your field with more hunger, energy and drive than you. It happens very often; Facebook vs Myspace, 50 cent vs Ja Rule, Apple iPhone vs Blackberry and it will keep on happening as history always repeats itself. Protect yourself from the fate of the complacent by always setting the standard high for yourself and be on a constant aim to raise the bar and constantly out do your last efforts, hence making you the industry standard.
Self Belief: “I heard the barbershops be in great debates all the time / Bout who’s the best MC? Kendrick, Jigga and Nas / Eminem, Andre 3000…”
Here Kendrick places himself amongst legends stating clearly that he believes he deserves to be mentioned in conversation when discussing the greatest MC’s of all time. Think Muhammad Ali screaming to a camera every chance that he got that we was “The Greatest Of All Time” self belief could be the most important quality required for success. You have to believe in yourself 100% before anyone else can, you’ll face many challenges and hurdles along the way and your self belief is what’s gonna push you forward against all odds. Stating to people how highly you think of yourself also forces you to live up to all that you say you are, so be careful, don’t say it unless you plan to live up to it or you’ll just look like an egotist.
Think I missed out any other important lessons? let me know in the comments! The full song is below for your pleasure!
